First global bird map: It provides ways to handle future extinctions

A global survey of bird diversity is conducted for the first time. It plays a key role in identifying species that are most vulnerable to extinction, according to researchers reported in the journal PLoS Biology.

The study for the first time provides a direct link between the geographical range size – the size, a species inhabits and the regional variations in extinction risk and biodiversity. This has been previously theorized, but never been proved on a global scale.

This first-of-its-kind survey provides a new way to plot patterns on a global scale. And this will enable conservationists not only predict, but also slow or reverse extinctions in future.
