First ever eco-friendly soy produced with WWF and Coop’s guidelines

The first ever eco-friendly soy produced has been shipped to Switzerland, with 1,000 tons of soy pellets arriving at the Swiss port city of Basel, situated on the Rhine River, according to WWF. Fenaco, Switzerland’s largest soy importer goes green by importing this eco-friendly product.

The soy was produced entirely in compliance with the Basel Criteria. Basel Criteria is a series of guidelines, the WWF and Swiss retailer Coop in 2004 established. These guidelines ensure the production to be ecologically and socially responsible.

If the soybean cultivation is expanded, it would have to destroy nearly 22 million hectares of tropical forests and savannah in South America by 2020! But, if soy is produced in compliance with the Basel Criteria, it will not need to be grown at the primary vegetation’s expense, according to WWF.
