India has always been known to be the land of contradictions with chronic poverty related predicaments on one side, and four of the Indians being among the world’s ten richest men on the other. And in the middle of all the commotion and palaver, a group of engineering students from Palwal, a city in the northern state of Haryana, have come with an utterly “green” and most importantly convenient conception in the form of an eco friendly motor bike.

oxygen powered bike 1

Basically the bike utilizes oxygen as a fuel. As Pratham Pal, one of the engineering students, describes:

This bike is different from others because the engine doesn’t burn fuel, nor does the temperature rise. The air is compressed and transferred to the engine without any combustion. The piston reciprocates from the air pressure leading to an up-down movement, making the flywheel run and the bike move.

According to the students, their main challenge was to create an equivalent magnitude of thrust of ‘blast’ inside the engine without the utilization of conventional combustion. The range of the bike will be 370 miles, using 100 liters of 300 PSI oxygen. The speed will be in the range of 6 to 12 miles per hour, but with time and the technological advancement, it is expected to rise.

With improved mechanism this bike can prove to be highly adaptable, especially in context of rising traffic (and with that – increasing carbon emissions) in the Indian urban areas. The emission norm currently followed in major cities in India is officially Bharat Stage 4, which only corresponds to Euro 4. In comparison, European Union has already adopted Euro 5, and about to advance to Euro 6 by 2014. Anyway, right now the students are hoping to get financial assistance to develop their prototype further, in a bid to reach a wider range of customers.
