Eco Factor: Fuel-efficient car powered by a hybrid engine.
Fiat is about to add an electric touch to its 500, making it capable to deliver more than 100 miles on a single gallon of gas. The electric boost will be added to new TwinAir model that already sports a 900cc two-cylinder powertrain.
The TwinAir will be mated to the company’s advanced twin-clutch transmission and will incorporate a small 5KW electric motor into the gearbox casing to drive one of the gearshafts. The electric motor will assist the engine when pulling away from a standing start.
Since the TwinAir engine takes about 23 percent less space than a four-cylinder plant, the battery pack will be attached under the bonnet. The company is aiming to reduce emissions to just 70gm/km CO2.
