Just as the activity in a computer can be perceived on multiple different levels, you would be knowing that with the help of Electroencephalography (EEG), we can study the electrical activity of the brain too. And its more then just news when an EEG system works on our own body heat to measure our grey cell’s activity. Along with Holst Centre, IMEC has come up with a wireless 2-channel EEG system that derives its power source from body heat and ambient light. It combines a thermoelectric generator that uses heat from the subject’s temples and silicon solar cells. Akin to a set of headphone, the entire system is wearable and doesn’t make one look under the weather at all. It can supply more than 1 mW on average indoors, which is more than enough for the target application.
Compared with previous devices, the new EEG unit increases the patient’s autonomy and quality of life. Potential applications include detection of imbalance between the two halves of the brain, detection of certain kinds of brain trauma, and monitoring of brain activity.
