Sino-Italian Ecological and Energy-Efficient Building at Tsinghua University in Beijing is regarded as a platform to develop the bilateral long-term cooperation in the environment and energy fields. The building is also a model showcase for signifying the potential for CO2 emission reduction in Chinese buildings.

The whole building is aimed at reducing the release of CO2 in the environment. There are hanging plants alongside the building which help in offsetting the carbon dioxide. It consists of 1000 square meters of photovoltaic panels that supply the primary energy needs for the building. The photovoltaic system comprises of cheaper and more efficient solar cells. The photovoltaic cells prevent the light from escaping and increase the chances of the light being absorbed and converted into electricity. The supplemental energy is provided by gas engines with electric generators. It is a south facing building and the northern exposure is heavily insulated and mostly opaque to shield against cold winter winds.

The SIEBB building’s shape has been derived from an analysis of the site and of the specific climatic conditions of Beijing. It optimizes solar energy absorption in winter and sun protection in summer. It was generated through a series of computer simulations of performance in relation to form, orientation, envelope, and technological systems.

The project is a collaboration between the Ministry for Environment and Territory of the Republic of Italy and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China. The building was designed to educate and showcase possibilities for an energy-efficient building, and hopefully this example will be soon seen in a lot of other architectural projects.
