The design developed by Bernardo Pereira from Ernani Freire Arquitetos Associados for the Museum Project at the Botanic Garden in Rio de Janeiro is a very modernistic structure that forms the middle of the two separate blocks of the Museum and is entirely different from the two historical buildings. The entire design, which appears like a sculpture with abstract forms and lines, is a very sustainable structure. The circulation spaces within the new building provide more natural light thorugh arboretums to come across for lighting the exhibition areas.
The top of the building is also furnished with a gazebo where the visitors can view the panaromic landscape and also see how the building utilizes ‘green’ solutions for sustainability like the green roof with water harvesting, photovoltaic panels for generation of solar energy and skylights that have adjustable illumination for making optimum use of natural light.
The administration and the auditorium also have similar eco-friendly features that are a great addition to the general environment of the botanical garden. Overall, the design is something that combines modern architecture with the idea of sustainability for the future and is thus a great combination of where the old meets the new in a botanical backdrop.
