Eco Factor: Christmas tree made from recycled stuff uses pedal power for decorative lighting.
The Tate Britain Art Museum has always hosted some of the best and most unique Christmas trees in the world. This year the authorities got an ecofriendly tree created by artists Bob and Roberta Smith that uses pedal power to light it up.
The tree has been made from recycled materials ranging from sandwich boards to an oil drum and has eight bicycles of various sizes attached to its end, each of which is connected to a generator. Children visiting the museum are tempted to pedal as hard as they can to light up the decorations on the tree.
The Dark Side:
Christmas trees are meant to be kept illuminated, so during daytime this tree will be kept illuminated by the people visiting the museum, however, as night falls and people go back to their houses it will need some backup source for power. The designers should have made use of solar panels, which could support the decorations during nighttime.
