Eco Factor: Enzyme uses RDX as food source to clean up land pollution.

Researchers at the University of York have identified an enzyme which can be used to reverse the contamination of land by explosives, especially RDX. The bacteria uncovered by the scientists use RDX as a food source thereby removing pollutants from land.

The study was used to develop transgenic plants that can draw pollutants out of soil and break them down. The scientists accept that there are ways to remove the pollution caused by RDX, but they were in need to find a process that works faster and on the scale required.
