Eco Factor: Yahoo’s new data center to be powered by hydroelectricity.

Yahoo has announced that they’re planning to get hydroelectricity generated by Niagara Falls to power its data center. The plan is to source about 90% of the data center’s energy demand from clean hydroelectricity. Other than green power, the data center will be made to resemble chicken coop, and use 100% natural ventilation to keep the servers from burning.

Out of the total amount of energy consumed by a conventional data center, about 50% goes for cooling and ventilation systems. This new data center by Yahoo will eliminate this energy use. With highly efficient systems installed and the use of renewable energy, the data center could be the world’s most efficient when it starts functioning. The company has also committed to reduce the carbon footprint of all its data centers by 40% by 2014.
