Eco Factor: 5,000 animals residing in Toronto zoo can power up the zoo and thousands of Toronto households.

Zoo authorities around the world face one common problem – the waste generated by thousands of animals that has to be cleaned up for the tourists. The Toronto zoo not only wants to keep the ambiance clean but also want to make the most out of the waste generated by its 5,000 animals. The zoo authorities intend to develop a $13 million biogas plant that could power the zoo and thousands of Toronto households.

Work on this project could start next year if zoo authorities are able to get some private investors. The authorities believe that the electricity produced by the plant can be sold to the grid and the plant can bring its investments back in just five years. After that they would be able to run the business in profit, which might mean some more meat for the all-so-important animals.

The Dark Side:

The high cost of the plant has already caused the government to back away from it. If the zoo authorities are not able to convince any private investors, then the plant might just end up on paper.
