Eco Tech: SustainX Energy compresses air in shipping containers for energy storage

Eco Factor: Renewable energy storage system provides compressed air to generate energy.

While renewable energy giants are in a race to develop the biggest and the most efficient renewable energy farms, there are few who are thinking of ways to store all that energy in a system that can provide power when the generators aren’t working.

While companies like Calmac believe in storing wind energy in the form of ice, SustainX is working on a system that stores energy in the form of compressed air for later use. There are already a few compressed-air facilities in the world where electricity is used to pump air underground for storage. However, SustainX is working on a compact system that makes use of off-the-shelf shipping containers for the same.

The company is aiming to develop a system that can store about 4MWh of electricity in one 40-foot long shipping container. The system will use excess renewable energy to compress air and store it in shipping containers, which can later be used to power a turbine to generate electricity.
