Eco Factor: Recycled shipping container to be used as waste water treatment plant.

The unavailability of pure drinkable water claims hundreds of lives each day in developing countries. Some children, especially girls, are not able to attend school, as they have to travel miles to the nearest source of drinking water to sustain their family’s routine lives. Researchers at the Texas Research Institute for Environmental Studies at Sam Houston State University and PCDworks have developed a mobile solution for developing nations.

The team used standard 40-foot-long shipping containers and converted them to The Deployable Aqueous Aerobic Bioreactor (DAAB). DAAB is actually a portable waste water treatment plant that can convert waste water to EPA acceptable standards within two days. The system uses specially selected bacteria to treat waste water and provide clean water for up to 600 people per day. Similar setups combined together can provide drinking water for a small village or even a small town.

The system can be controlled via the internet which reduces maintenance costs. The setup can be installed in hours and can work for at least six months before manual maintenance is needed.

The Dark Side:

The system is intended to work for developing nations. Some developing nations don’t have basic computer facilities. The systems’ internet connectivity features won’t really do any good in these parts of the world.
