Eco Tech: San Francisco gears up for 30MW of wave power

wave energy

Eco Factor: 30MW electric power generated from waves.

Wave power has always considered an underdog in the era where other renewable energies are set to rule. Though expensive and not efficient for now, if tapped efficiently, wave energy does hold the potential to power cities on its own. San Francisco is one such place that is getting ready for this new venture to provide them with 30MW of green electrical power.

The project will demonstrate the feasibility of generating electric power from waves about eight miles off the west coast of San Francisco. The system will make use of technologies that ensure minimal impact on the marine life below. Initially the project will generate 10-30MW, which will soon be increased to 100MW.

The Dark Side:

With solar and wind energy sitting on the top, wave power is still sitting on the back bench. With improvements in energy harnessing technologies, wave energy can somehow challenge the big guns, but for now it’s a distant dream.
