Eco Factor: Use of solar energy to rebuild the all important oyster beds.

Solar technology has already shown us that it not only is promising a clean environment in the future but also enables us to remain energy independent in the time of energy crisis. Taking the technology a step further, marine biology professor James Cervino, thinks he can rebuild and improve the pitiable conditions of oysters across the East Coast of New York.

Cervino’s solution, which he calls the “Electric Oyster Reef Project,” makes use of metal helix-shaped spirals that rise out of water. Connecting these spirals with solar panels and then planting them in shallow water generates an electrical current. The current makes calcium carbonate, already present in the sea water, collect onto the metal spirals, which finally become the breeding ground of new oysters.

The Dark Side:
The technology is still in its infancy, for now Cervino is finding live oysters around the base of the installations, but this technology needs some more development before it can be used globally.
