Eco Factor: Anaerobic incineration of waste to generate electricity for US Army.
Defense company QinetiQ has been awarded a contract by the US Army according to which the company will supply a system that will help the armed forces generate electricity from waste. The system dubbed PyTEC can consume up to 100kg of garbage each hour.
The PyTEC system heats mixed waste in a pyrolisis tube that releases combustible gases, which can be stored and later burned to generate electricity. The system heats waste in the absence of oxygen and doesn’t require waste to be diced before being fed into the incinerator.
The system can handle difficult waste sources with ease, and the end products of the PyTEC system are energy and a glassy by-product that is only 5% of the volume of the original waste. The company will supply up to 10 systems, which will eventually be deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan to dramatically reduce the army’s dependence on fossil fuels.
