Eco Factor: Smart grid project envisioned for Austin.
Come August and Austin would see the launch the Pecan Street Project, which hopes to provide the city with 300MW of renewable energy that will be produced within the city limits and the installation of thousands of smart meters in residential and commercial complexes. The smart metering project will cover 440-square-miles, 500,000 devices, 100TB of data, 1 million consumers and 43,000 businesses.
The project would be launched by local utility company Austin Energy and would transform the city into the urban power system of the future. Once the project commences, consumers will use smart energy monitoring devices, energy-efficient appliances, smart markets and a smarter transportation network as well.
