Eco Factor: New battery technology doubles the operating range of electric vehicles.
Nissan has announced that the company has succeeded in developing a new battery that can double the operating range of the LEAF and other EVs to up to 186 miles on a single charge. The new battery consists of a combination of small amounts of cobalt and nickel to the manganese present in current batteries.
The company has tested the battery and has proved that it is able to withstand 1000 or more charging cycles, without any considerable loss in performance. Nissan has stated that the new batteries will be available by 2015, and it won’t cost more than the current battery tech, because the most expensive addition is cobalt, but the battery needs a little of it for a considerable improvement.
