Eco Factor: Fuel-efficient concept ship harnesses renewable energy for lower carbon emissions.
Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has unveiled a next-gen car-carrier concept that will generate some of the energy it needs for propulsion from roof-mounted solar panels. Dubbed ISHIN-I (Innovations in Sustainability backed by historically proven, Integrated technologies) the concept ship can reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 41% if it ever meets reality.
In addition to the use of solar panels that make up for a 3% CO2 reduction, ISHIN-I also makes use of an energy saving design that reduces wind resistance and the optimization of the hull design to reduce frictional drag. Coupled with a highly efficient propulsion system the ship reaches its target of reducing the overall CO2 emissions by a total of 41%.
Powered by onboard batteries, ISHIN-I will be able to transport a maximum of 6400 cars and will include features that reduce emissions when the ship is docked at harbors.
