Eco Factor: Mini-planetarium made from recycled materials.
Graduates from the California Institute of Arts have designed a mini-planetarium in a geodesic dome that is made from salvaged materials from office waste that is glued together using a paste made from rice. Dubbed the Reclamation Project, the mini-planetarium shows a starry night sky in a white papered dome.
The authentic rendering was recreated with pinholes pricked onto a black paper cylinder. The inventors, Drew Denny and Kyoung Kim, painstakingly folded 6000 sheets of trashed paper into quilted sections covering the dome’s reclaimed PVC pipe structure inside and out. The paper sheets were then assembled with homemade rice paste, which they used instead of toxic glues. Though the planetarium won’t be the best in the world, the choice of the materials does make it stand apart from the rest.
