Eco Factor: Solar-heated water to be provided in Abu Dhabi’s Modern Residential City.
Now there is another reason to live in Abu Dhabi’s upcoming Modern Residential City, as Jordan’s Millennium Energy Industries has announced a project that will provide 1.3 million liters of solar-heated water for the new development. Designed to provide housing for 25,000 people in its 48 structures, the complex will account for power savings to promote a greener lifestyle.
The announcement comes just after a week of the announcement that Abu Dhabi will get 7% of its total power needs from renewable sources by 2020. This solar-heated water is projected to amount to an 8MW power load saving for the complex and at a cost of $6 million it will save 35% of what other traditional water heating systems of the same scale cost. MEI states that the system will have an electric backup, which, however, will only be used in extreme conditions, as the system itself is designed to save more than 90% in operating costs even during winter months.
The Dark Side:
The world today is not only facing an energy crisis, but a water crisis too looms large. The solar-heated water will definitely save a few megawatts of electricity, but it will have its effect on the scarce water resources, as hot water is more prone to wastage.
