Eco Factor: Solar powered classroom for underdeveloped nations.

Maendeleo Foundation is trying to impart computer education to children living in rural Uganda. Since people there lack access to basic amenities including water and electricity, the project started by the foundation makes use of solar energy. The mobile classroom provides technical education to about 100 kids a day and is carried in an SUV with a high-power solar panel installed on its roof.

All the 15 computers, the fold-up tent, chairs and tables fit neatly in the car’s boot, enabling the authorities to setup the classroom anywhere they want to. Chip giant Intel thinks that the project is important and they have awarded the foundation with $100,000 in prize money, which will be used to build another similar classroom to begin operations in Rwanda.
