Eco Factor: KitVes Project to help generate renewable energy to support onboard auxiliary services.

Working for a better tomorrow, Kite Gen Research is renowned for their wind energy harnessing “Kites” that can power anything from your home to a freight carrier. After developing a concept kite to harness wind power to supplement ships’ propulsion systems, the company is now venturing into a new project that will generate electricity to support onboard auxiliary services.

Dubbed KitVes, the project requires the development of kites measuring 100-square-meters that can be raised and lowered to and from a height of 1000 meters. At that altitude, the kite will be able to harness wind energy, and pulls on cables, and this traction causes an electrical generator to rotate.

Based on a “yo-yo” phenomenon, the kites are wound or unwound depending on the wind resistance. The research group claims that the kites could generate between 60KW and 30MW of green power for one ship, depending on the set-up.

The energy generated by the kites won’t be used to power the ship, but will be used for additional electronic and electrical systems such as air conditioners and electronic equipment.
