Eco Factor: Solar power plant capable of generating green electricity even after dark.
Keahole Solar Power has installed an array of micro-scale concentrating solar power concentrators at the Holaniku Solar Farm on Hawaii’s Big Island, which will be able to generate renewable energy even after sunset, overcoming the biggest hurdle in global solar adoption.
The farm consists of a thousand solar collectors covering 3.8 acres that are capable of generating 2MW of thermal energy. All this energy is used to heat 8000 gallons of water which runs through Electratherm organic rankine cycle waste heat generators.
This system can operate on a temperature difference of just 20 degrees, which enables the plant to function efficiently after dark and during overcast days.
