Eco Factor: 1000MW of solar power to be generated every year in India by 2013.

With just 5MW of installed solar capacity to date, India has some big plans for the near future. India is ready to launch its Solar Mission under the National Action Plan on Climate Change, with a proposal to generate 1000MW of solar power by 2013.

The solar installation would be the first phase of the planned 20,000MW of installed solar capacity by 2020. For the first phase, the government is planning to generate 200MW of off-grid solar power and cover 7 million-square-meters with solar collectors.

The long-term plan projects the generation of 20,000MW of grid-based solar power, 2000MW of off-grid solar power and 20 million-square-meters of area covered with solar collectors. In addition to the ambitious solar generation project, the country is also planning to provide solar lighting systems to 9000 villages under existing schemes by providing soft loans.
