Eco Tech: GM proposes plug-in ‘ecosystem’ to boost electric car acceptance

Eco Factor: Standard electric car charging ports could increase customer acceptance.

Driving your electric car for hundreds of miles only to find that the connector at the destination doesn’t match your car is bound to frustrate you. Presently there are no connector conventions in place, and car chargers are just like cellphone chargers, with most brands following their own designs, which are no good for the other car.

General Motors thinks that standardizing connectors for electric cars might just enhance customer acceptance and give them another reason to own an electric car. GM is proposing a “plug-in ecosystem” when more extended range electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt hit the market. The company is proposing the SAE J1772 connector as common electric vehicle conductive charging system architecture for all major automakers of North America.
