Eco Factor: Gas and electricity “Smart” meters to be installed in every home in UK.
Announcing one of the most outrageous plans to save electricity in gas in every home of the United Kingdom, the Government has stated that every British house will be equipped with electricity and gas “Smart” meters by 2020. The plan will cost the nation about £9.3billion at the rate of £340 per household. The Government has further stated that homeowners will be able to save money in the long term by seeing their costs and usage in real-time basis.
The remotely monitored meters would not only benefit homeowners but also companies like British Gas, allowing them to do away with thousands of meter readers and call centre staff. The consumer groups say that since energy companies will also benefit from the installation, they should carry a fair share of the financial burden of the installation costs.
The department of energy believes that the £9.3billion plan will, in any case, prove beneficial since it will account for a total savings of over £11.79billion in the long run. Homeowners who are already generating renewable energy for their households will also be allowed to sell excessive energy to the grid using the meters.
