Eco Factor: Electric cars to boost US grid by storing excess energy.

The US Department of Energy is lending funds to Detroit Edison Co. and several partners to demonstrate the use of advanced batteries that are used in EVs to boost the US power grid. The system will store excess energy during off-peak hours and transfer the energy during peak hours to boost the grid.

In total the DOE has released $620 million to develop a smart grid to better handling over increasing energy demands. The project includes the development of large-scale energy storage systems, smart meters, distribution and transmission system, monitoring devices and a range of other smart technologies to aid the Smart Grid.
