Eco Factor: Renewable energy powered subway system saves 46,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.

Till date Bilbao, Spain, was making news with stations designed by Sir Norman Forster, and now there is another reason for the Spanish company to boast its skills as it has becomes the world’s first subway system that is powered entirely by green energy. Metro de Bilbao, the company in charge of managing the railway system has announced that during 2008 it didn’t use even a single watt of electricity that came from conventional sources.

The system was powered by renewable energy supplied by Naturgas, which accounted for the train system to save a whopping 46,000 metric tons of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere. The CO2 emissions can be equaled to the amount released by 8,000 cars that were driven for 20,000 miles annually. Apart from using green energy, the trains also made use of brake energy recovery system that made trains safer and also accounted for energy savings of 33%.
