Eco Factor: One of the largest solar facilities in the world proposed for Austin.
Austin Energy is working on its target to provide 30% of the total energy demands of Austin, Texas, in the form of renewable energy. To achieve this green status by 2020, Austin could have one of the largest solar power facilities in the world. The plant is proposed to be set up on 300 acres of land outside Webberville in eastern Travis country.
The plant will be built and owned by Gemini Solar Development Co. and will be operated by Austin Energy at a cost of $10 million annually for the plant’s 25-year lifespan. The facility could be operational by 2010 and produce enough energy to power 5,000 homes.
The Dark Side:
Although the plant seems utmost necessary not only for Austin, but also for the world, manufacturers believe that the plant would increase power costs substantially, which would indirectly affect the cost of other products as well.
