Eco Factor: Low-emission electric hybrid vehicles to be developed by Ford.

Ford Motor Company is planning to electrify 10% to 25% of its fleet by 2020. Ford is taking a $5.9 million loan from the United States Department of Energy (DOE). With this money, Ford will be improving the fuel efficiency of 13 models and develop new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The first and the foremost step would be to convince drivers that plugging in is useful, and Ford is already working on this. To achieve the desired results, Ford is gathering relevant data on driver behavior with plug-ins, and especially their Escape hybrid plug-in, across the country.

Nancy Gioia, Ford’s director of hybrid vehicle programs, recently made a statement predicting that Ford will electrify 10-25% of their vehicles in some way by 2020. President Obama is also in favor of a million plus plug-in vehicles by 2015. Hence, Ford can very well cash in on this opportunity.
