Eco Factor: Energy-efficient LED lighting system for greener parks.

Parks are meant to be as green and sustainable as possible so that visitors can enjoy the green ambiance. Marcel Kawka is a designer who wants the “Green Factor” of parks to be extended, with her solar powered LED park lights concept. While energy saving is the main goal of the designer, she also makes use of recyclable materials and high-end technology in this state-of-the-art solar lighting system.

The lights are not only designed for parks, but can also serve places such as terrains with no access to the grid. These lights come with laminated photovoltaic panels which power Philips Luxeon LEDs, which are controlled by dusk sensors. These dusk sensors eliminate energy wastage by making sure that the LEDs light up only after the sun sets. Since the lights sit atop extruded anodized aluminum, their light weight means that they can be installed without any help from heavy construction equipment.

Kawka has also prepared some variants of these lights, which include high post lights with two or more fittings, free standing small posts, fittings for building facades, and hexagonal ground fittings. With the best available technology made to good use, Kawka believes that these lights should be able to work continuously for up to 5 years.

The Dark Side:

Apart from the usual “Dark Sides” associated with solar lighting systems, the designer here has to make sure that her lights don’t need any trees to be uprooted for their smooth operation.
