EcoFactor: Promethean Power brought out its first prototype of a solar refrigerator that it wishes to launch in the Indian market to promote clean energy.

It was about 3 months ago that Promethean Power made an announcement that they would try and build a large solar refrigerator for developing nations like India, and now they have already come out with the first prototype. This new solar refrigerator will be more of a small scale commercial cooling device aimed at storing the milk and food products of an entire community. This new solar powered public storage system would help communities save plenty of energy. The refrigerator is powered by three to five solar panels that produce 180 watts of power. The company targets rural India as its primary market, and that makes plenty of sense indeed.

While the unit itself is more costly than normal storage units, it will save loads of cash when it comes to pick up of products and generator power. Since India is blessed with plenty of sunshine, the refrigerator barely needs any additional conventional power. Promethean also received further funding for the continuation of the project from Quercus Trust. The commercial version of the product is still two years away though.

The Dark Side:

There is no perceivable dark side to the solar refrigerator apart from the initial cost. But once people realize its true value, and if the respective governments are willing to subsidize green gadgets, then it should be just fine.
