Eco Factor: Energy-efficient portable computer.

We have heard of plug-in gadget chargers and network adapters, but how about a computer that can directly be plugged into a wall socket? Marvell Technologies has done just that by developing a computer similar to the size of the adapter you use to power your home theater system. Dubbed the SheevaPlug, the idea behind the computer was to make a green computer that is so small that consumers can plug it directly into the wall socket.

The system works on less than 10% of the power of a typical PC being used as a home server. On the specifications side the computer carries a 1.2GHz processor, 512MB of DRAM and 512MB of flash memory storage. The system connects to a network via Gigabit Ethernet and it also comes with one USB communication port. Of course, you won’t be able to run Windows 7 on the system, as it supports multiple Linux 2.6 kernel distributions. The system is available for $99 and is expected to become cheaper after a few months.

The Dark Side:

The system lacks storage capacity and without any video port, it seems like the only way to get in touch with the SheevaPlug is through a web browser. However, spending $99 on this plug-in computer should be worth it.
