Eco Factor: Energy-efficient lamps run on solar energy.

Out of the six billion people living on the planet, a third lack access to electricity. While industrial designers have already pulled up their socks to develop products specifically for this market, Philips is one of the few manufacturers that have announced the development of off-grid lighting systems which can aid in the development of people living in these under-developed parts of the globe.

The company has developed three new lighting systems for the unprivileged, which includes the Uday Lamp which combines CFL and LED bulbs and a rechargeable battery fueled by a solar panel. The company claims that a day’s worth of solar charging can keep the light going for four hours. The hand-crank flashlight uses a dynamo to charge and offers 17 minutes of illumination after two minutes of cranking.
