Eco Factor: Phone made from recycled aluminum carries ultra-low power E-Ink display.

Designed by Luis Barceló, the Nokia Ink 01 is an answer to the growth in the number of cellphones being used and their impact on the environment. The Nokia Ink 01 is designed to reduce the energy consumption in all stages of the lifecycle of the phone, making it easy to disassemble and ensure that it had a high percentage of recyclable materials. It was a goal of this project to use current proven technologies that can be implemented quickly and not rely on technologies being developed and potentially very expensive.

All the structural parts of the phone are made of recycled aluminum, a material that be transformed with very low energy consumption and can be recycled almost endlessly. The main keypad substitutes mechanical keys with a capacitive sensor, reducing the number of separate parts. The main display is an ultra-low power consumption E-Ink display.

The E-Ink display doesn’t allow the user to take or review photographs. This was resolved by including a mini-OLED display to allow the user to take photographs and review them, the act of taking photographs goes from a social ritual to a more personal one but it keeps the overall energy consumption very low and creates new gestures in the interaction with a mobile phone.

The phone also uses a silver/zinc battery instead of lithium ion. These batteries are 95%recyclable and have a 40% more energy density than lithium ion batteries. This reduces the amount of times the phone needs to be charged during its useful life also reducing wasted energy during re-charging.
