Eco Factor: Energy-efficient wireless routers from NEC.
NEC has launched two new wireless LAN routers that the company claims consume 30 percent less power than comparable devices on the shelves today. The routers from the AtermWR8150N Series, (BGN), come with an Eco Button, which when pressed, switches off all LEDS that the router is equipped with.
Once in “Eco Mode,” all blinking LEDs are switched off, except the Power LED that keeps you informed that the router is actually functioning. Turning off the LEDs doesn’t have any effect on the overall performance of the router. However, we do doubt the 30 percent energy reduction claims made by NEC, since LEDs are energy efficient themselves and there is no chance that a few blinking bulbs account for 30 percent of the power used by a router.
