Eco Factor: HVAC system assisted by solar energy.

Lennox has stepped into the solar gadget arena with the launch of the industry’s first solar assisted HVAC system. Dubbed the SunSource, the heat pump system combines a traditional heat pump with a single 3 foot by 5 foot solar panel capable of generating 190 watts of power. The panel can be mounted onto the rooftop to gather the maximum energy from the sun.

The $10,000 system will be able to harness the energy during the day and support the HVAC system, reducing grid consumption by over 8%. Lennox claims that these savings combined with other available government tax credits and rebates will cancel the extra one needs to spend for the SunSource system.

The Dark Side:

A 190-watt solar panel is great for a television but is too little for power-guzzling systems like HVACs. Moreover, the price tag of $10,000 is much more than what one pays for a traditional HVAC.
