Eco Factor: Energy consumption monitor and regulator.
Using an energy-monitoring device to reduce energy consumption in your workplace is great. However, there aren’t many individuals who like to check out energy statistics frequently on the monitor’s small display. Hence the monitor just adds to your green gear, without having any actual benefit. Jason Deperro has tried to solve these problems with a device he calls the eMetric.
The eMetric is an office management system that allows workers to control their energy usage. The system comes in two modules – an eMetric Powerstrip and an eMetric computer application. The power strip is integrated with a wireless transmitter that connects to the computer through a wireless gateway. The user gets details of the energy being consumed right on his or her workstation. Users can then set timers or turn off energy wasting gadgets from the monitor.
The system is designed to work at less than 0.1KW, hence it does not add much to the energy being consumed. Developed especially for a team of workers, the system influences the team and makes them compete on energy savings.
The Dark Side:
The system does not show real-time statistics and the user has to send a command to the power strip for the same. People in the office are mostly busy, so making them check their energy statistics might not be as easy as it seems.
