Eco Factor: Cellphone charged by solar energy.

Solar energy is going great guns at the Mobile World Congress with some great companies including LG and Samsung launching their innovative solar-powered phones. While those phone might be a wee bit expensive, ZTE telecom, a Chinese manufacturer, has also joined the solar race with the low-cost Coral-200 solar phone.

Developed for the Digicel Group, the phone has an integrated solar cell onto the back panel that reportedly generates 0.5 volts of solar electricity. This charge is then fed into a converter that enhances the voltage to 3.7 volts, perfect for the phone’s lithium-ion battery. ZTE is claiming that the phone’s solar panel can generate the same amount of voltage even in low light conditions to prevent you from keeping your phone on the roof of your car, just for a simple recharge.

The Dark Side:

The featureless phone should only be accepted as a great piece of ecofriendly technology in underdeveloped nations. ZTE telecom should add some phone features in a phone other that simply adding a black solar panel onto a dull and black cellphone.
