Eco Factor: Uses solar energy to power the theater throughout the year.
The Palm Theater in downtown San Luis Obispo may not be too famous for eco reasons among the locals, but they will all vouch for its $1 popcorn and cheap ticket fee. But what most of them do not realize is that it is clean solar power that enables the Palm to keep the prices down and make sure that the movie buffs have the best possible deal. The Palm is covered by a solar panel roof that produces energy all year long. Since the theater starts its show at 3:45 in the afternoon, it has all day to accumulate the power. The solar panels have reduced the operating costs of the theater by 50% since 2004, and the owners aim to eventually reduce them by 70%. The Palm is an example of how clean energy can also be an excellent economic investment.
The Dark Side:
The theater is obviously a business venture and one cannot expect it to go all green. But with the growing interest in solar energy, the theater could try going 100% solar. Even the use of plastic in the theater could be avoided to go further green.
