Eco Factor: The new Mobion chip from MTI Micro increases efficiency of fuel cells by 25% and reduces size by an equal 25%.

Fuel cells are the energy sources of the future. While many believe fuel cells will be the ultimate answer to our energy needs, since they are powered by water, we are not there yet. But leaving aside the automobile industry, it seems the world of gadgets and gizmos is all set to get an energy-efficient fuel cell powered by methanol. MTI Micro is working on a commercial version of its new Mobion Chip, which is 25% more efficient than the previous fuel cells and occupies 25% less space than the earlier versions. The Mobion chip not only saves energy, but also waste as it can be used as a refill cartridge.

These chips could soon be the power source of the next iPod or iPhone as the company plans to make these available by 2009. The chips use pure methanol and not a diluted version, giving them more efficiency. The manufacturing process is simplified by an injection procedure. The new fuel cells will cut down both on energy wastage and reduce essential space enabling your gadgets to become smaller.

The Dark Side:

The Mobion chip is still in the developmental stage and if it is to be commercially successful, then the cartridges would have to be small, less than 3 fluid ounces, in order be allowed on airplanes. This is one aspect MTI is still working on. Moreover, many such technologies have fallen flat in the last stage of development, and one would be more convinced when one sees these Mobion chips actually hit store shelves.
