Eco Factor: Solar powered car sets new distance record.

The future of motoring depends on green technologies, but each of these seemingly promising eco technologies come with their own set of problems, which make them unfit for personal transportation. The main problem associated with solar powered cars is not only the lack of speed in the ride, but also the distance one can travel on a full charge.

A Canadian man has ended all speculations about the distance one can go in a solar powered car, by setting up the land distance record in a car that looks no less than a UFO. Marcelo Da Luz completed his 15,000 km, overtaking the 2002 record of 13,055 km set by an Australian team. The 140-day journey took Marcelo across Canada twice and he stopped in 44 towns and cities of Canada. The $500,000 car can cover a distance of 200 km on a single charge at a respectable speed of 120 kmph.

The Dark Side:

While Marcelo has showcased the fidelity of a solar powered car, we have to say that such cars, if mass produced, won’t be able to live up to the expectations of young riders for whom speed and looks are the two things that really matter.
