Eco Factor: Students convert 1972 MGB to run on electric motors.
Electric engineering students at the University of South Carolina’s college of Engineering have brought a vintage red MGB to the modern age by replacing its gasoline engine with a modern electric engine.
The car, actually owned by Roger Dougal, has undergone $10,000 worth of changes that has made it a zero-emission vehicle, which according to Dougal can go really fast on short distances.
The original engine has been replaced by an AC motor with a custom driveshaft. The space left vacant by the engine was filled with more than 100 super-capacitors, which will be later coupled with a lithium battery to better its range. In addition to the engine, the team also made a few changes in the vehicle’s design which included the removal of the convertible top and a roll bar added.
