Eco Factor: Low-cost electric vehicles from Detroit Electric.

In an effort to cut down the cost of electric cars, which might seem to be the most practical ride of the future, Detroit Electric has teamed up with Proton, a Malaysian auto company, to debut a new range of affordable all-electric cars. Planning is underway to employ Detroit Electric’s patented electric drive system along with long-lasting Li-ion batteries on two Proton vehicle platforms.

Detroit Electric expects to roll out about 270,000 EVs from plants based in India, which will then be sold in Europe, the UK, China and the United States. The company has claimed that family cars developed under the scheme should cost between $23,000 and $26,000 and the city-range models will be priced between $28,000 and $33,000.

The Dark Side:

With a reduction in manufacturing cost, the performance of the electric cars finally developed will definitely suffer. However, since the cars are being developed for city usage, the lower cost might take the upper hand.
