Eco Factor: Low-emission buses powered by ethanol generated from waste timber.

Possessing the world’s largest ethanol-fueled bus fleet in the world isn’t stopping Stockholm from aiming even higher. Stockholm’s transit company has ordered a fleet of 85 new buses, which like their predecessors will be powered by ethanol. Sweden has already latched onto ethanol as a green fuel, which unlike the ethanol produced in U.S. and Brazil, is generated from waste timber.

U.S. and Brazil are also generating ethanol but it mainly comes from corn, sugarcane and other food crops which are often criticized. Stockholm’s transit company Busslink has ordered 85 new buses from Scania, which has more than 20 years of experience with ethanol buses in practical operation. The company has delivered 600 such buses, about 500 of them to Swedish cities. Compared to conventional diesel-fueled buses, Scania’s buses emit 90% less carbon dioxide.
