Eco Factor: Low-emission hybrid propulsion system for boats.

In an effort to lower the carbon footprint of pleasure boats, Austrian motorboat maker Frauscher Bootswerft has teamed up with Steyr Motors to develop the first-of-its-kind serialized hybrid propulsion system for boats.

The system is a new powertrain that can be installed on four Frauscher Bootswerft models measuring 6 to 9 meters, where they could replace the conventional 250hp gas-powered engines. When running in the all-electric mode, the engine allows for a top speed of five knots.

When used along with the gas-powered engine, the system promises fuel savings and lower emissions. The brushless permanent magnet generator offers reduced maintenance costs and eliminates the use of a generator to power the onboard electronics.
