Eco Factor: Hybrid motor yacht expected to lower fuel consumption by 40%.
Ferretti Group has announced that its new 78-ft motor yacht is the largest zero-emission pleasure craft in the world, and will be powered by a hybrid diesel/electric engine. The unique hull design will lower the yacht’s fuel consumption by as much as 40%.
The boat can reach a top speed of 16 knots and run silently even when all of its onboard appliances including the air conditioning system are in use. The boat can operate in five different modes with the diesel engine running the electric motors and recharging the batteries.
The boat can run in an all-electric mode as well, but when the batteries get discharged the boat can recharge them on the move with the diesel engines being used as generators. The company claims that operating the boat costs just $1 per mile, which is far less than $4 per mile for a conventional diesel-powered yacht.
