Eco Factor: Sound installation powered entirely by solar energy.

We’ve seen the use of solar energy in various concept speaker systems and hi-tech headphones. Designer Craig Colorusso is trying to prove the worth of solar energy in the real world by developing a sound installation powered entirely by the energy of the sun.

The Sun Boxes, as the installation is entitled, is comprised of 20 speakers operating independently, each of which is powered by its own solar panel. There is a guitar sample in each box, which play together to create a composition.

The guitar samples are all of different length so the whole piece keeps evolving. Participants are encouraged to walk through the installation. While walking some speakers will be closer and hence louder, so the piece will sound different to different people in different positions throughout the array, creating a unique experience for everyone.

The installation is powered entirely by solar energy and no batteries or any other kind of backup power source are involved, which means that the Sun Boxes will stop playing music when the sun sets and the piece changes according to the time of the day and the position of the sun. The piece will be presented on the north shore of Boston on October 17th, 2009.
