Eco Factor: Conceptual structure harnesses green sources for energy and is self sufficient.

Hospitality Design’s Radical Innovation design competition by Miami-based Michael Rosenthal Associates brought many wonderful architectural concepts into light. From this competition “Wind Tower” will appeal more than any other project to eco-conscious people, as it embraces almost every effort to be green. It’s an egg-shaped conceptual luxury resort, which can be a landmark in the architectural world. The structure sounds almost completely self sufficient and does not depend upon external mechanical power to maintain its breathing atmospheric conversion system.

To fulfill energy demands, the exterior sheathing contains PVs, and to heat the boilers, cooling and heating the hotel, wind turbines has been installed. Recycled pools perform many functions in addition to their usual utilization. They serve as a catch basin, water reservoirs, fire barriers etc. The structure also includes indoor gardens to create a climate, though at smaller level, but for effective insulation. Further, construction waste has been reduced to its minimum and interior lighting is provided by energy efficient LEDs. A rain water collection system will provide water for flushing and irrigation.

Other than this, the resort’s interior finishes are completely made up of non-toxic materials. The exterior also includes LED curtain walls, which will indicate time by changing colors throughout the night. This wonderful eco-egg can be considered as a living organism among the jungles of concrete.

The Dark Side:
After going through the specifications, I can’t figure out any drawback in above mentioned concept design. However, admiring a concept is easier than putting it into reality.
